Interview Tips for candidates

Preparation:

From the minute you meet an employer you will be assessed on the way you project yourself, the way you handle questions and your personal presentation. It is vital that you are well prepared.

Beforehand
  • Find out about the company. Get to know the product or service it offers, a brief company history, past growth/future potential and the company’s standing in the marketplace. By investing the time in researching the company, you will show that you are genuinely interested in the position available.
  • Review in your mind the details of your present or former employer. You will be asked questions about previous positions and what appealed, or didn’t appeal.
  • Know your achievements and be able to quantify them.
  • Know what difference you made/make to the company.
  • Check the time and place of the interview – don’t be late. Make sure you know the full name and title of the person who will be interviewing you.
Questions They May Ask You:
  • Why does this position/company appeal to you?
  • Tell me about yourself.
  • What are your major strengths?
  • What are your weaknesses?
  • Why do you feel you would be suitable for this position?
  • How would you describe your sales style?
  • Why do customers like dealing with you?
  • How would you describe your management style?
  • What’s been your greatest achievement?
  • Have you applied for other positions?
  • What is your current salary package? (know the different components)
  • How do you like to be managed?
Questions You May Want To Ask:

The interview is a two-way situation – the employer is there to find out about you and you are there to find out about the position and company. Prepare some questions which will show your interest and also help you to make an informed decision.

  • How will I be measured? – What will my performance measurements be?
  • Is there a training or induction programme in place?
  • Is there potential to grow and develop within the role?
  • Is there potential for promotion within the company?
  • What are the company’s future plans?

Remember…

  • Be yourself.
  • Be honest and sincere.
  • Have a positive attitude towards the interview.
  • Answer questions with more than a simple “yes” or “no”. Expand and explain wherever possible by giving examples.
  • Ask for the question to be repeated if you don’t understand.
  • And if you still feel unprepared – read our compiled list of Behavioural Questions.

We wish you all the best in your job search.
